About

LAURA MCGAUGHEY, CPDT-KA, ABCDT, RVA
Certified Professional Dog Trainer & Registered Veterinary Assistant

Laura works full-time as a professional service dog trainer at Freedom Service Dogs of America but also accepts a very limited number of private training clients on the side; previous to her career in service dog training, she ran Delightful Doggies full-time from 2012 – 2017, offering an array of in-home training and pet sitting services.

A Certified Professional Dog Trainer – Knowledge Assessed (CPDT-KA), her specialty is working with reactive, fearful and aggressive dogs. She obtained her CPDT-KA certification in October, 2014, and certifications as a dog trainer and veterinary assistant from Animal Behavior College in August, 2012 and January, 2013, respectively.

In March, 2013 Laura also achieved primary certification in TAGteach. She is also a professional member of the Pet Professional Guild and co-founder of the Colorado Progressive Reinforcement Trainers group, dedicated to adhering to and promoting force-free training methods. You can download Laura’s complete CV here.

Laura started on her career path as a dog trainer after spending time as a shelter volunteer. Through the shelter’s training program, she found a whole new love and purpose, and vowed to learn as much as possible about dog training and behavior so she could work to keep more dogs in their homes and out of the shelter and rescue system.

A native of Kentucky, Laura relocated permanently to Denver in 1996 and currently resides in Englewood with her two dogs, Jasper the “fluffy butt shelter mutt” and Hidalgo the Chihuahua. Together they enjoy hikes in the mountains and doing nose work both for fun and competition.

  1. We are having trouble finding someone to come to our house for training so we were hoping there was a class we could attend. We have three dogs that have, after over a year, have started “arguing”. They are all great dogs but have started butting heads. It seems to be the 5yr old female (border collie/Great Pyrenees mix) and the 1yr old catahoula/Airedale mix that are the biggest problem. We also have a 13yr old boxer/lab mix. What kinds of classes or training schedules do you have that can help us?

    1. Hi Moni,

At this time I am no longer taking clients as earlier this year I accepted a position with Freedom Service Dogs. If you need a referral (and I’m sorry I didn’t realize this comment was sitting on my site since April 1 and it’s now July), please let me know. We will have a referral site up and running soon at https://bestcoloradodogtraining.com/ FYI. You can also fill out the contact form there and give me more information about where you’re located so I can better find a referral for you.

      Thanks!
      Laura
