Uma

Our foster dog daughter, Uma, now has a Facebook page! Please like and share her page so we can find her a permanent, loving home.

Uma is a beautiful, sweet and gentle cattle mix. She gets along fine with our dog, Jasper, and our two old cats, Merlin and Buttons. She has some arthritis and needs to lose some weight. We’re also working on healing a hot spot she has on her front right paw.

She would do best in a quiet home–she can scare easily with loud noises. She needs a patient, loving home and would be great with other mellow pets, or as the only pet.

Please contact me for more information or if you’d like to meet Uma. She is a sweet joy and would be a perfect companion for a person who isn’t looking for the most active dog, but a sweet dog who enjoys walks and affection.

Thank you,

11th Hour Social Media Blitz to Fight for Shelter Pets’ Lives

Reblogged from YesBiscuit!:

On Wednesday February 15,  Assembly Bill A05449A will be introduced in the NY state Ag Committee.  This quick kill bill is expected to pass and we need to make our voices heard tonight to keep that from happening.  This quick kill bill is of immediate concern to NYers because it affects their community pets but it’s also very worrying for pet owners everywhere because it sets a legal precedent for more needless shelter pet killing. And once again, it falls upon “the irresponsible public” to stand up for …

Please take action tonight against this proposed bill in NY that would needlessly kill homeless pets and sets a dangerous precedent!

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Love is in the air…

I wish all of you a Happy Valentine’s Day! It’s my pleasure to work with you and your beloved animals to bring them dependable, responsible care and the always-needed belly rubs and butt scratches they need!

I am thankful to all of you who have helped Delightful Doggies grow into a successful business. Your patronage means I have more experience, money and resources to give back to those in need. The last year and a half of my life I have been blessed to volunteer time to MaxFund to help socialize animals and train dogs in basic obedience. This week I will formally begin my required volunteer hours for my trainer certification hour, meaning I will be able to help even more dogs. This is a very exciting time for me!

I encourage all of you to find more ways to give back. It is one of the most fulfilling and wonderful parts of my life. There are so many shelters and rescues in need of everything from just basic monetary/supply donations to VERY MUCH NEEDED foster parents! Feel free to contact me for more information about how to find the right way to give back. Share the love and pass it along!

Thank you again, so much,
Laura

Meet our foster kid, Uma

As I’ve written before, I have been a volunteer with MaxFund for 16 months now, and one of the things I’ve always wanted to do was become a foster parent. We’ve adopted, I’ve walked lots of dogs, done events, played with cats…but have never fostered, though I know how important it is.

Well, I’m an official foster parent now, I’m happy to announce!

Uma

Uma is available for adoption!

This is Uma. She came to MaxFund after good Samaritans found her all alone in Barnum Dog Park. No one has come to claim her. When I first saw her, I was immediately attracted to her. She reminded me a bit of our dearly departed Soup. When I went in about a week later to bathe some dogs at the shelter, she was the only one on the list. I am convinced this wasn’t just a coincidence!

I fell in love with her as I bathed her. She didn’t LOVE getting a bath, and she seemed a little skittish when she’d hear a loud noise, but she was very gentle and allowed me to bathe and dry her, and then clip her nails. I had to have assistance clipping her nails because her front legs are sensitive, plus she had a hot spot on one paw, but she was a trooper.

I went home and talked about her with my husband, how much I wanted to become a foster and take her in. We got the blessing from our landlord and put in our application. After waiting for approval, we have finally brought her home, and she is doing very well! You can see in these photos on my personal Facebook page how much fun she and Jasper had just upon meeting!I know my connection with her was right, that she would benefit from being with our family. She even likes the cats…though my grumpy old man-boy is a bit unwelcoming. She and my girl cat have hit it off, too.

Uma’s name comes from the Hindi origin and means “light, peace.” She is definitely a beam of peaceful light in our house!

Fostering is such an important part of saving lives. Rescues and shelters are always in need of fosters to take in animals, help them acclimate to home life and build social skills, and advocate for ultimate adoption. If you’ve thought about it and have the space to have a dog or cat or two crash temporarily with you, it’s a fulfilling way to give your time and resources. You can learn more about fostering with MaxFund here.

And, if you are interested in adopting Uma, we can arrange a meet and greet so please contact me if you have any interest. Let others know!

Thank you,
Laura

Lost dog alert – Jade

UPDATE: Jade has been found! Thanks to all of those who helped search for her, and for the ladies who realized she was at the Aurora Animal Shelter!

At an adoption event yesterday, Jade slipped out of her harness in a Petco store on the border of Denver/Aurora off Havana Street. If you live nearby, please help us find her and keep an eye out! I wasn’t at the event but heard about what happened and wanted to get the word out using as many methods as possible, so please share this information so we can get her back, safe and sound!

  • She is a possible chihuahua/Pomeranian mix
  • She has a tag and is microchipped
  • She can be a little skittish, particularly around men. Lure her with treats (she especially likes wet food) or your own dog, as she does like other dogs and will approach them.
  • Very sweet and affectionate; likes being cuddled by people she connects with.
  • If found, please take her to the Petco or MaxFund. Contact number for MaxFund is 303-595-4917 so please call with any information you may have on her whereabouts, if you can’t catch her.

This calls for a training tip moment: When a dog is lose from you, remember to NEVER chase a dog. This causes it to turn into a playful game of “catch me if you can,” and will only make matters worse. The best options are to run away/try to get the dog to chase you, throw treats on the ground around you to attract the dog, or using other methods of luring by using things the dog likes. Be upbeat and positive–it’s never good for you to be frustrated or allow situations to turn negative when doing any kind of dog training! Dogs can pick up on that energy and it works against your ultimate goals.

Thank you for reading, sharing this and looking for Ms. Jade. I hope she is found quickly and I’ll post a comment to this blog with any updates.

Another January client!

Just when you think you’ve had all the clients you will have for a month, a sweetheart like this one shows up!

Ms. Lucy is enjoying 30-minute drop-in visits while her mama’s traveling. She really enjoys getting belly rubs and making doggy snow angels, as you can see in her gallery.

Lucy’s a real lover and she came from the Dumb Friends League, proving once more that rescue/shelter dogs are the most awesome dogs out there!

I’m really thankful to Lucy’s mom for finding and hiring me–I am really enjoying our visits!

Enjoy the last week of your January,

Why Delightful Doggies?

I wanted to take a minute and write a bit about the reason I started Delightful Doggies, our philosophy and goals, and why you should consider hiring Delightful Doggies.

There are lots of options for consumers when it comes to their pets, from obtaining them to caring for them to making decisions on their behalf that can alter their worlds tremendously; we have a lot of power and responsibility when we invite animals into our lives. I started Delightful Doggies because first and foremost, I love animals. From a very young age I was drawn to any kind of animal that was around, be it a horse or pig on my uncle’s farm or a hunting beagle who lost its way and showed up at our house, where we would call the number on his tag so he could be reunited with his owner.

Laura and a CHAMPS dog, Ready. Ready was successfully adopted!

I also have a tremendous drive to try and make an impact in the well-being of animals’ lives. My journey in discovering what I should do began when I officially joined the volunteer fold at MaxFund in October of 2010. Walking dogs who couldn’t wait to get out of their kennels, stroking cats who couldn’t wait to sit in a lap, these things showed me how much need there is. When I started doing their CHAMPS program in the summer, I became very inspired to work towards becoming a dog trainer. The CHAMPS program at MaxFund meets on a weekly basis during the spring, summer and fall months to work one-on-one with a dog in need of obedience training to provide this basic need that can hopefully mean lifetime adoption for the dog.

And so, I began the process of finding the right training for me to become a certified dog trainer, and the program I chose also offers veterinary assistant training. I decided to do both because health and behavior go hand-in-hand.

I quit my job doing business development and administrative work for a nonprofit to start working in dog daycares so I could gain even more experience and insight. I learned a lot through this process and gained a lot of confidence in myself, so I took the plunge and began developing Delightful Doggies so I could have the freedom to work for myself and try to lay a foundation for what will hopefully not only provide a means to a living, but to build bridges within the community to make a difference.

When you hire me, you are supporting my volunteerism and hopeful goals to make an impact in the lives of homeless animals. As Delightful Doggies grows, the capacity to help local rescues and shelters will increase.

When you hire me, you are realizing the importance of hiring a caring, professional adult to whom to entrust your pets. I am fully insured and bonded, and am pet first aid/CPR certified. I am fully committed to your pet’s health and well-being, and the professionalism of my services.

When you hire me, you are able to feel good about supporting my efforts to become a trainer who will not only work with you as a valued client, but will work with dogs that need second chances. It’s my aspiration to concentrate my dog training studies to be able to help rehabilitate dogs in shelters, to get them adopted, and to work with dogs in danger of being relinquished. I am in this to not only have a great time delivering great services to you and your pets, but to save lives.

I want to thank you for taking the time to read this post, check out my website and consider hiring me!
